Week 5: 2nd Level 1 Reader

Today he read another book - I see I saw. He haven encounter the "aw" word before so I clue him on the s + aw and he managed to figure out. As well as k + ick too. He completed this lengthy book and by the time he goes to the 2nd last page, he mentioned he was a bit tired. Nonetheless, he finished reading it. Good Job! Time to search for more level 1 books!

A proud moment was when my gal drew this for school. Theme was on National Day. Great drawing and coloring, taking consideration that she didn't learn any drawing or coloring skills. Only fault I could find was the flag position.

Week 5: Reading and Starting O family.

On Wendesday, I discovered a fun eLearning web. Actually not newly discovered, it's just that I didn't explore it previously. There a are quite a few fun and interesting Phonics/Sight word games great for revision for my 5Y boy, as well as Maths games for my 6Y gal.

Wednesday, we did Phonics assessment on OP/OT/OG for my boy. Afterwhich, I was busy doing the new Chinese assessment with my gal. We took a long while as I want her to figure out how to read the words by using the Hanyu Pinyin. Tedious process!

Thursday, we went library to return the Timmy & Tammy range of books. My 6Y gal loves to read them. Today we got another 3 books, as well as a Mermaid book she choose and 1 more reader that I choose for her. As for lil boy, I choose 3 Lvl 1 books, and he managed to read 1 of it by himself. Below are the snapshot of the book. Though it's a simple book but I am very much encouraged that from cannot read to slowly learning to READ!

We even spent some time doing a Sight Word games from List 1, then proceed to do eLearning for both of them. Reading/Phonics as well as Maths.

Week 5: Back to learning after LONG weekend

After the long weekend, I decided to take it a bit slow. I printed the O books for this week, as well as a decodable reader - I Can Hop. For my gal, I randomly download a Maths printable from www.teacherspayteachers.com and give it to her. Jus Google Number Bonds or Maths under Kindergaten and you will see a lot.

Before I continue on today's lesson, I wanna share a website that I really love that I stumbled upon recently. "www.readinga-z.com" By chance, I was searching for free printables, I stumbled upon this web. Only cons was that it didn't allow you to download for FREE but you can set up an account for 14-day trial and you have a limited "amt" of stuff to download. I personally like the decodable books and high frequency words books. Go take a look!

Today, we revise all the A word family with his phonics book. He can complete all and spell on his own. I think he is ready for the next family. We proceed to O. (A bit regret cos I think I should follow the sequence of A E I O U cos some of the phonics reader for O, aldy incorporate the Is and Es family so..... Pls take note)

He can read the reader for OP/OT but since it's his first reading such a long and lengthy story, I need more patience and also more time for him to read. He did appear to have some difficulties but he is still able to read it. Very good. So for now, I will bring him thru the O family and then skip back to E.

National Day Long Weekend

This week we had a super long weekend. So I tried to let the kids relax and enjoy since they do not have any homework from school. But on my side, I tried to prep my gal for her Spelling on Wednesday and also more reinforcement on my boy's word families.

I bring his mini booklets out, and I can see that he can faster write and sound out, with minimal guidance. Starting to get the hang of it. So we went thru AM, AN & AP on his Phonics Book 2's activity. Can finish up well and confidently.

My gal was faster in grasping her spelling with some mixed-up over "sharp" and "shark". Overall, was still good cos she got it after having the spelling twice from me. And I also did a "Days of the week" booklet for her as she mentioned she want to do something similar to my boy's word family. It consists of the cut-out letters of the days, supposed to stick day by day and write & draw something about it. Quite fun in her sense.

I also did up a simple Sight Word list, for bringing out to read, as well as a mini Phonics Word Family list for training him to read fluently too. 1 more sigh word reader as well, this time he got it right for his first attempt. Good job!

Week4 - Hands on mini book (AT, AN) & Reading Sight Word Readers

Since this week is short due to upcoming National Day long weekend, decided to blog down what else we have done for the week.

Tuesday, we had hands on for lil boy while my gal is busy with her Spelling learning for Wednesday. This week's spelling is tough with all the Q-words. She is having a hard time and we are practicing more frequent. Meanwhile, lil boy colour, cuts out the correct picture and stick to the correct mini books. He will also say out the picture and try to spell them. Bravo! He managed to spell all with minimal help.

Wednesday, we do a revision on all the Letter Sounds on his Phonics Book 1. He managed to say the word, identify the correct beginning sounds. Gave him a break afterwards. A remarkable thing to share was the aid of Phonics videos. He can blend them quite well, as compared to reading the Phoncis reader. Guess interactive learning is more effective for him.

Later part of the day, we revise by reading the Sight Word readers that I downloaded. Only downside was he complained that it was not in colour. He mentioned he prefer it in colour. Ok, point noted and taken. Good thing is he can read them on his own. Improvement!

Journey to Chinese Reading & HYPY - Lesson 1

For my English learning, I numbered them by weeks. So for my Chinese learning journey, I will number them by Lessons. Today marks my 1st Lesson!

I used a chart that shows the different sounds of the HYPY. With a transparency, so I could keep reminding on the 4 different tones of the HYPY. Coupled with the basic Chinese storybooks that I have gotten long ago, we start our 1st lesson.

Today we will read and get used to the HYPY while waiting for the HYPY book & the 识字本 to come in so that I can start on writing the "Sight/Frequent-used" Chinese characters. We read 4 pages, for 3 times. Emphasizing on the 4 different tones, the blends of the different sounds. Wow, no easy task but we will overcome it by learning together! Jia you!

Week 4 - Revision AT, AN & AM family (Monday)

Today we did a quick revision for both my boy and girl. As I will be following up on my boy's Sight Word List and also on my girl's Hanyu Pinyin. Yes, I will be teaching longer as of this week. 20mins on English, each additional 15mins for Sight Words/Phonics for my boy and HanyuPinyin with Chinese reading for my girl. Tough to be a mummy nowadays.

Today I took my Filefolder which I have prepared much earlier on. I printed from here. It has AT, AN, AM which I taught  earlier on and a new family ET. I used my DIY dice, wrote At, an, am & et. Both will take a turn to roll the dice and pick up 1 card on the Word Family the dice shows. Sound and blend and put into the correct family pocket. After few rounds, I shuffled the cards and give 1 card to each of them per turn. Both can blend the 3-letters word effortlessly. Most amazed is my boy. I am proud of myself for his results!

After which I spent 15mins to go thru Sight Words List 1 as he still have 6 words stucked. No choice, we go thru the word formation again as it's the fastest way for him to remember the word. And yes, again this method showed results and effectiveness!
