Week 13 - Something NEW! Learning Multiplication

Today I introduce the Times Table and Multiplication sign to my gal since she need to start learning for tml's Spelling. Thought to myself was a simple activity and then focus on Spelling.

Oh meanwhile, my boy also need to learn. This is the time when the Wipe Clean Sight Word folder comes to use. LOL~ He will write to fill the blanks and read all to me after he is done. So for a good 20mins I can focus on my gal.

I use 'Sets of' to explain how to count in a simplier way. So for example: 2 x 2 = 2 sets of '||'. So she counts the number of sticks and totaled them up. She is doing a pretty good job as they have learnt how to count in 2s in school already.

After dinner, we had some Dice Sight Game. The kids roll dice and move and attempt to read. Using their lego bricks, they get to stack on top of their bricks each time they get it right. (Oh, of cos we gave little boy some chance) A fun way to get my little boy in the act!

Want to have some fun? I got them from here... Enjoy!!!

Week 12 - 5 & 10 Frame & 我们学写华语字! (Monday)

Today we revise 5 & 10 Frames. I DIY-ed my own 5 & 10 Frames card, with a recording sheet that he needs to write down his answers.

He draws a card, then tell me the number. Afterwhich, he needs to know how many more to make 5 or 10.

He then place the counter on his "Frames" then write the mathematical sums. Eg: 4 + 1 = 5 Then continue doing the rest.

Seems ok but after a while he lost concentration. Alamak. Need to build on his concentration very much. We did 4 sums for each addition then call it a day. He took around an hour just to "focus" and finish up while my gal completed her sets of Maths material in like 20mins.

At night, I make used of my new Chinese Word magnets. Happen to see this Magnetic Printing sheet from Daiso. Wow! I was happy and laugh til mouth open big big lo.

I tried and printed a sheet. Simple 30-40 chinese words, those simpler and freq words. Will use them for writing on their Magnetic Whiteboard sheet.

Today my gal did 爸爸妈妈姐姐妹妹哥哥弟弟. Will continue to practise them til she can write without refering.

For my boy, simple 一二三四五. Considered not bad la.

Week 11 - Number Order (Wednesday)

Today I decided to use my new DIY template that I gotten the idea from Doodlebugs Teaching which I decided to customised to my kids' learning needs.

My 6Y is more advanced so I did slightly bigger numbers and venturing to the low 100s. My boy isn't that great with his number sense so I did 1 set of smaller number within 20s, 2 sets of Skip counting in 2s and 5s. (which the 5s will come in handy when he starts to learn the minute hands)

I started off with simple explaination of Least = Less and Great = More, using single digit to show examples and got them to write down in their mini whiteboard. OK, idea was wonderful for my girl as she grasp and started off to her activity. Idea didn't go that well, I wonder is it because he cant visualise the numbers. So I let him try the set with numbers within 20s.

It did works well for a while, with my 6Y progressing to the 2nd set of activity which involves some addition or subtraction sums. My boy is still struggling. And he starts having trouble after 20 as he isn't that "good" with his numbers which needs more drill and practise.

I took out the DIY Base blocks that I did previously. I compare the blocks, sorting out the same ones, asking him to count the balance (which will left with smaller numbers) to decided ultimately which is bigger and smaller. He got it but still....... (his attention span is still very SHORT)

Nonetheless, it works very well with my girl and she is doing a lot better which is a consolation to me at least. For my boy, I need to work hard and harder! Below are the 2 sets of the DIY printables I made.

1st set: It comes with 6 sets of numbers. As I mentioned above, there is 3 sets specifically for those starting out with Numbers, (1) within 20s, (2) Counting in 2s and (3) Counting in 5s. The child will arrange the number as per the board from (1) Least to Greatest or (2) Greatest to Least.

2nd set:  It comes with 4 sets of Mathematical sums in 4 different groups. 2 for my K2 and 2 sets which is within 20s for my K1. What the child need to do is to finish the sum, record the answers on the small cards. Finally to arrange them in the order from (1) Least to Greatest or (2) Greatest to Least. Simple as that.

On Tuesday, We did simple counting and Revision on Addition and also counting on Base Blocks for my 5Y. This is what we did.

For my girl, She already started to do problem sums (which I told her from next exercise onwards, she need to answer in sentence which I think will be good for practising sentence constructing). After that on Time, Greater and Lesser as well as the Number Order.

Week 10 - Interactive Maths Activity

Today we continue Maths, followed by simple Vowels-Word Family sounding with some sight words sentences together.

B4 I start, Decided to label their exercise. Looks good!

Lil boy did simple counting and writing on top of cutting and pasting. He still haven really developed the idea of colouring his work but he is happy and excited to be using colouring pencils for his work! Need some addition and Numerals & Numbers matching which I did for him previously. Rather fulfilling lesson after yesterday's 10 Frame. (Oh, i am not giving up. I am slowly going from 1 onwards. Stay tune!)

My gal did some Place Value and Base 10 blocks work. She colour happily, count and write. She understand the concept tt the blocks comes in 1s, 10s & 100s. But I haven got her to count or add beyond 100s yet. Thinking to take step by step.

Afterwhich she did this Roll Dice activity. She roll the dice for the 2digit number.

Then she will draw the blocks. Follow by writing them in words. Lastly in expanded form. She did it well. And I called it a day. Overwhelming learning might backfire.

My boy did simple vowels sounding, simple 2-letter words reading, 3-letter words and then sight word sentences. Not bad. Think I can plan to finish up the Phonics assessment book 2 and go on to book 3 soon. (Big challenge as I haven read up on it)

For the interactive journal, i got it from here. Other than that, you can google for more ideas with keywords "interactive journals".

Week 10 - Learning 10 Frames

Monday we had simple Phonics revision for the E-family & 1-20 number sequencing for my 5Y and Sentence Construction exercise from Assessment book for my 6Y gal. Simple and I think all did a great job on a Monday!

Afterwhich Mummy shifted around the house and brings back the Easel board that was bought 4years+ ago when my gal was arnd 2Y. Good for writing the spelling words as well as Phonics family to read on ad-hoc basis. (Especially during Time Out)

Today I introduce 10-Frames to my boy and revise it for my gal. She was doing some Place Value and addition/subtraction Maths problem sums so I encourage her to use it to aid in counting. She managed to get it fast and use it well.

My boy initially was ok. But as I get him to do more sums, simple add/subtract, he seems to lost focus and cant draw the 10-Frame model properly. After getting angry a few times on repeating, I decided to call off a day. Shall reinforce again this week.

I made use of my remaining time doing more DIY materials from online. This is 1 of them. Super love this Time Filefolder.

Week 7 (Friday) - Sight Word List 2 & SImple Maths practise

Friday, I recapped the HYPY with my gal, still on the same "bo" sound that blends with the different 'sound'. She can better tell me when it is blended, what sound is it? I tried to focus more on the end sound than on the 4 different tone.

Afterwhich, I took out the Maths template and did simple revision. I gave her 3 2-digit numbers and she have to add or subtract accordingly and also try to spell it. Seems not bad as I can focus a bit on my boy as she do her sums quietly.

My boy started off with Phonics assessment. Seems to be a bit mixed up with 'at' & 'et' and also 'an' & 'en'. I need to keep sounding out the alphabets individually and blend them to let him hear it. Only then he is able to differentiate. Does anyone have any suggestions on how could I further explain or sound them?

Then we move on to Sight Word List 2. List 1 took us a long 1 month along with Phonics practise. He is able to sound simple 3 or 4 letter word as well as sight words from List 1. There are also some frequent words that we read from the storybooks that he can read even though they were not from List 1. Good Job. Out of List 2, he can already read 1/3 of the cards. So I try to take it slow and start on this 3 more frequent and confusing words for him as it is not able to sound using Phonics.

I have also made some word spinners that I am sharing my template here. Here are some pics of how I used them as 'Busy Bag' activities when we are out for meals or coffee. Have fun implementing your own creativity as the usage is limitless.
