Teaching SIght Words - Week 2 (Reading Story with Picture Aid) & K2 Number Bond

I realised that as I proceed on to teach more words, I need to use more unfamiliar words that he isn't able to read yet. Therefore it occur to my mind that I came across storybooks with pictures that substitute for the words. It actually aids in helping the child to read the familiar words first and recognising them, and for the more 'profound' words, the pictures allows the child to guess what is the word.

Therefore I came up with my own version of the mini Picture storybook for a trial run. Using back the same story, I transform some of the words he had difficulties reading yesterday into pictures and lets try it again to see how he fare. He definitely can relate to the words faster in his reading.
After doing that book, I ask him to practise Copying from the book. I heard from Teacher that they are training the children to learn copying from blackboard and apparently my boy is still slow but at least he is completing his homework in school. I even use a timer to spur his competitiveness.

And perhaps I was too excited about the new book, I introduce the mini Picture Storybook : In, Out, Day, Night, We, Go. He did show some difficulties in reading. Okok, I goe the cue! I will slow down a bit here. We will practise all this 3 books for now til he is better at it. Meanwhile we should also do some other learning. And he did said that he is tired from today's lesson. He said, "Mummy you used up all my energy!"

Jiejie was learning sentences construction and I realised that she can form and understand the words quite well that she got a bit bored after using them for 30mins. So instead of drilling the same englishg reading and writing, I decided to do some Maths with her today.

But before we do Maths, I did a simple spelling learning for next Wednesday with her. I link up the similar points in the words to make learning it simpler and easier. I coloured the similar alpha etc. Pardon me as I nvr taught them phonics and I don't know about phonics too. But it was colourful and fun.
my messy explanation
Number bonds, to teach her the bonds of Ones and Tens. Hopefully she can faster learn to add Ones first, then Tens and no need to go thru the ordeal of counting them one by one.
Example of Number Bond
Therefore, I decided to do some practise with her by printing out some additions and subtractions. For me, personally I feel that most children have problems with subtractions than additions. Do you?
In school, I learnt that they learn with drawing pictures to show the tens rather than in numbers thus I had to have to prep for a lot of patience when I was explaining to her since it was our very FIRST time trying something new together.

Therefore I used the simple Bond exercise and haven introduce using the Bond to do Addition and Subtraction. I have included the blank worksheet template and also the simple worksheet I created for her. She did well separating the Ones and Tens.

Teaching Sight Words - Week 2 (Recap & Lesson 2) and Sentence Constructing

With 2 days of using the mini book, I didn't create or give anything else extra as I do not want to confused my boy. Main thing he should slowly learn and pick up the words as I go along with him.
So to recapped what I taught last week, I do up a mini practise 4-page book for him to write down what new words was taught. The practise is to see how many words he can remember and if he can spell them. It is not a big deal if he cant spell as main purpose of my aim is to see that he can recognise the words when he sees them. And gradually he will be able to spell them. So if you are following my lesson plans, just assist the child should they cant spell by spelling it out loud for them to let them write it down. You can also train their listening skills with this practise too.

He could identify the 8 new words by himself. Without me speling for him. Its a great milestone for myself! Hahaha~

He can answer the question "Who are you?" In written form but I need to spell "am" as he kept writing "I m xxxx"

He can write "I m 5" which is good enuf and wont push him to write "years old". I dont want to push it til he feels intimidated. Start slow as he doesnt love to WRITE!

As for this week, the new words I am introducing are: Are, Where and Who, along with 4 opposite words: Big, Small, Up and Down. I create a simple story of children on see-saw, comparing apple and cherries. And with the addition of Aeroplane and Boat to further explain on the opposites of Up and Down.

Just another simple story to further encourage the confidence to attempt to read as I can see that my boy is happy and excited to read the 1st mini book that I have created. I can see he feels the sense of achievement in able to read it. Good Job and lets keep it up!

He did exercises like matching the Opposites for Big-Small and Down-Up. He drew pictures as well. He says its Small Lychee on a tree with Big Apples in a box.

As for my older girl, in K2 this year, I decided to introduce some "thinking skills' by jumbling words of a sentence and let her place it in order. With this activity, I target 2 areas. First, the ability to recognise the words and put them in order to form a sentence. Second, to encourage her creativity by giving her all the words to see if she can create new sentences that I didn't think of when I was creating the activity for her. And with each new sentence, she can practise her handwriting and also her "spacing" in writing sentences as she writes down each new sentence. Isn't that 1 stone kill 2 birds?

For 30mins session, she managed to do this few sentences, I would say not bad for a first. Will let her practise more on this activity. Train their thinking skills.

After having their learning session, they get to eat the home-made popsicle that they made together.

Hope you have fun playing and bonding with your little ones.

Teaching Sight Words - Week 2 (Lesson 1)

I come up with my short story to encourage reading after familiarising with the words taught last week. I supposed it is slightly easier as I can out the "familiar' words in the short story and he can learn to "register" the words faster than picking a pre-reader level book. (But definitely I will keep reading with him the storybooks too)

It is a simple 4-page mini book that includes the words - The, And, I, Can, And, See, A. Gradually I hope to be able to get them to create their own mini storybook after each learning session. It is beneficial to my #1 as she can practise for writing stories which she might be using this skill in primary school life.

Monday are usually spent on finishing their homework from Friday's Chinese enrichment class. Tuesday - Thursday are the time I can get to spend with them. So hopefully I can incorporate more words to their "Library".

His 1st attempt to read my customised Mini Book. Good job and I think we are getting somewhere. I have created a version for Boy and Girl for download.

Tic Tac Toe - Fun time while having meals outside

Usually I try to pack some activities in a small pouch to entertain the kids while we go out such as having breakfast on weekends, our usual coffee break or even having meals outside. Ha~ I don't really like my kids to handle the phone so much, that is unless they are using some educational apps to pass time, if not seriously for my playful 5Y boy, I think I should really cut down some time on playing.

I decided on this Tic Tac Toe as I feel that it helps to improve the usage of thinking as well as creativity? Will Tic Tac Toe help to improve creativity? I am not too sure but please give me more advices should you have.
I created a simple Tic Tac Toe template and find some pictures on MyCuteGraphics.com and cut them out. Laminate for longer lasting and then cut them out again. Small pack of activities and simple fun time. Below I have also included the template should you are keen.
Else than daily learning, I indulge some Stickers Pasting time on weekends. They have to find the matching stickers based on the silhouette and then stick the correct stickers. Other than that, they have to use the 'given' stickers to decorate the given scene, as well as some missing puzzles that is given in stickers form to complete. Gotten this 2 books previously but never got to use so now its a good fun time for the 2 lil ones.

FUN with Sight Words - Week 1 (Lesson 1)

This week I started teaching Sight Words to my 5Y. Till today he is not able to recognize and "register" whatever he learn and apply to his homework.

He can't really read especially when all the words are all over the place. Kinda worried as its already 1/2 year GONE. (Just like that, scary lo) And knowing that for K2 need to start having Spelling, I think it's high time I "PUSH" him a bit more.

This week, we start slow. THE & AND. I used an idea from a Facebook group - Preschool Resources. Using newspaper to get the child to focus. So I tore 2 articles and gave 1 each to them. Asked them to circle the words and count the number of times it appear.

This activity is really useful. First, they learn to recognize the familiar word. Second, they learn to count. Last, it will leave a deeper impression in their heart. (Hopefully) Poor jiejie has to follow and sit in while I teach. Good in a way to reinforce her words library too.
The next day I search for printables and found this from 3Dinosaurs. She offered freee printables activities for Sight Words. I printed the words that I am currently doing this week - A, And, The.

For Day 2, I did the printables and ask them to circle, read, write. My 6years old did it effortlessly, while my 5years old did it with some help. Overall, I am quite happy with their performance today.

Lil man write out the 3 words he learnt, with an additional word - See! Did so well with his reading too. Good job!

Been a long time..................

Wow, it has been a long while since I blogged here. I used to blog vividly for my 2 kids when they were much younger. Now, I am just so busy with their daily needs and activities on top of the usual house chores and routine that I seriously seldom blog. To be exact, I used social media platforms like Facebook to post daily stuff and interesting things about them.

Recently I started doing some DIYs worksheets at home for them, on top of those free printables from web. I really salute those mummies who homeschool, blog and yet can DIY and share their wonderful templates. Bravo to them.

I created this dinosaurs worksheet templates lately for my boy. 5 Years old and he is not keen to sacrifice his cartoon time nor play time to do learning. Really a vast difference as compared to my 6 Years old girl. And yes, sidenote, both my kids are in kindergarten now. They are 6 and 5 years old. Times really flies and without knowing it, I am SAHM for almost 6 wonderful years!

This are the pictures of them using the printables from web for my 6 years old, doing 3 digit additions and my boy using my Dino template for simple addition within 10.

Here I am sharing the Dinosaurs Template, feel free to download and input ur own mathematical sums. Left it blank so mummies can laminate and reuse them for multiple use or even as it is.
As for my gal's 3-digit Addition, u can get it from FileFolderFun by clicking here to link back to the sire.

What a late update!! Bad mummy..

A very very late update. Lots to do, lots to be busy and its so so tiring running around the house with 2 toddlers. I simply find no time to really on my netbook to do updates. And night time, i spend it lazing after a tring day.. So what is the update so far for my 2 little angels cum devils??
Rayshon 1st Birthday

Birthday Cake
We celebrated Rayshon's 1st Birthday at the chalet at HomeTeam NS Pasir Ris, thanks to my dear GF & hubby who booked the chalet for us. Though kinda run-down, but still managable for us. It was a fun time, spending the weekends with our family. And rayshon had so much fun in the inflatable pool. And Irisa tried to breathe under water.. So cute.. Anyway, splashing good time.
At Singkids - Airport

Irisa's new friend (finally)

Brought Rayshon for his Dec BBs gathering with Irisa along. Went to Singkids at T3, Changi Airport. FOC for him and i paid a small amount for Irisa to go in. Had fun playing in the Balls Pit, running about. And finally, made friends with my friend's daughter. She is such a chatty, sociable gal that I was also taken aback. And i like, cos she looks so independent although she is just 5 years old. Envy envy. Will Irisa grow up to be so independent??

Celebrating both grandparents birthday

Waiting for daddy at the airport

Irisa pierce her ears!!
Irisa went to have her ears pierced. Guess that is the most latest updates for her. As for her speech, I can tell you is she is such a sweet talker. Whenever mummy cook/bake something, or someone buy her toys, she can say Thanks in such a way that can MELTS your heart. I mean MELT, really makes u feel so good about. And it does makes me feel that my sacrifice to stay home = PRICELESS
When they play in peace
And the rest, jus some small outings as per above pics. Too many pics and so many updates. I guess you will get a better feel in Facebook as my iPhone is so much accessible to me during the day.
And for Rayshon, up to date, 4 teeth out and 2 on the way. Still waking up for night feed (pls, when can i 'sleep thru'??) Vocabs are quite limited, as he refused to repeat and only repeat those that he likes or want to. JieJie, KorKor, Daddy, PaPa, Ma, LaoMa, AhYi, YiEr, Ball, Car, MumMum, PongPong, PorPor, Da etc. Some i cant really recall.
In terms of temperament, i can sense TROUBLE soon. Both equally stubborn and Irisa already to the stage, I need to practically yell or bring out the CANE to move her butt. Oh my, when can she be more obedient?? I do hope it is a passing phase. And Lil Boy, really loves to bully Irisa. Kick, bite, beat, whatever ways. Sign..
But anyway, I am not worried cos i know deep inside, they love each other. Lil boy will run to Irisa to seek comfort when he got scolding or beaten by me or anyone. Or even when he falls. But time also comes when they both fight. But when you see them kiss, it is what we call PRICELESS. The rewarding part is to see them lovey dovey and play in PEACE. How often?? Rarely.. hahhaa..
