Week 15 - Impromptu Sentence Writing

We are still continuing our Weekly 5pm Chinese writing from last Thursday. Today I get them do a page from Maths Assessment and then do simple writing cum spelling.

Since my gal need prep for Spelling tml, I decided to do an inpromptu Spelling - Writing short sentences for my boy. Short phonics words with some sight words in it. Results was satisfied as he can spell most of it, just that he a bit not focusing 100% on the sentences as he tends to missed out a word and I need to prompt a bit.

My gal learn her spelling at the side on her own with the 'oil' and 'oin' sound words. She is fast though. So today's lesson ends in 40mins. Great! And Mummy can rest a short while.

Yesterday, Weekly 5pm chinese, I revised 一到十 for my boy. Good! He can write it, ermmm... I would say Satisfactory. But recognising them is not that good yet. My gal, on other hand, she is writing short sentences with 我. I think not bad though both isnt that good with recognising the words yet.

Today I decided to do the same simple words for them. Taking small baby steps and also revising with them the words on the way. 大小上下. After completing, will get then to flip and read what they had written before. Not bad for today! All done in 15-20mins!!

Week 6 - Spinning for Sight Word (Monday)

This week I found a new way to learn thru FUN. Yes, fun and play comes along beside Learn! I think that is the most effective way to leave a deeper impression on a kid's mind!

I DIY-ed together with Mummy Sherryl on doing a Spinner. Then i saw this Spin a Sight Word activity and I immediately download and print it out. Printed in a smaller size so I can use them even when in the car, while waiting for meals to be served outside or even on train rides.

The list 1 is easy feat as my boy already finished List 1. So I sort of let him spin and cross out all those he can read in the respective colour groups. And he did a good job. Time to move on to List 2.

I found a template which is blank and used it for her to spin and learn Spelling. Spin and write the word and read. Fun!

Week 3 - More sight words learning (Tuesday)

Today we did a Sight Word Hunt. Lovely mummy helped me get the magnifying glass from Daiso as I kept either forgetting it or couldnt find it. Ha~

Finally I can put the Sight Word Hunt to use. Just google and type "Sight Word Hunt" and you will see many templates. Download the one that us suitable and print it for some fun time.

My kids search for the words, ticked it. Afterwhich I tried to teach him to read it and then write it once. Not really gonna imposed much spelling on him but at least some handwriting practise.

I was going thru the Spelling for my gal and thus I did a surprise Spelling for my boy as well. Asked him to spell some of the sight words he knew - Rayshon, he, the, she, that, his, of, all, at, it & had. But the terrible part, I asked him to write "Rayshon can see". He make my blood pressure goes UP UP and UP. He writes "c" for "see"!!! Plus the a-z was all mixed up in wrong directions!

In the end, punishment for him. He writes A-Z in upper and lower case. Haiz... Stressful day of 40mins lesson!

Teaching SIght Words - Week 2 (Reading Story with Picture Aid) & K2 Number Bond

I realised that as I proceed on to teach more words, I need to use more unfamiliar words that he isn't able to read yet. Therefore it occur to my mind that I came across storybooks with pictures that substitute for the words. It actually aids in helping the child to read the familiar words first and recognising them, and for the more 'profound' words, the pictures allows the child to guess what is the word.

Therefore I came up with my own version of the mini Picture storybook for a trial run. Using back the same story, I transform some of the words he had difficulties reading yesterday into pictures and lets try it again to see how he fare. He definitely can relate to the words faster in his reading.
After doing that book, I ask him to practise Copying from the book. I heard from Teacher that they are training the children to learn copying from blackboard and apparently my boy is still slow but at least he is completing his homework in school. I even use a timer to spur his competitiveness.

And perhaps I was too excited about the new book, I introduce the mini Picture Storybook : In, Out, Day, Night, We, Go. He did show some difficulties in reading. Okok, I goe the cue! I will slow down a bit here. We will practise all this 3 books for now til he is better at it. Meanwhile we should also do some other learning. And he did said that he is tired from today's lesson. He said, "Mummy you used up all my energy!"

Jiejie was learning sentences construction and I realised that she can form and understand the words quite well that she got a bit bored after using them for 30mins. So instead of drilling the same englishg reading and writing, I decided to do some Maths with her today.

But before we do Maths, I did a simple spelling learning for next Wednesday with her. I link up the similar points in the words to make learning it simpler and easier. I coloured the similar alpha etc. Pardon me as I nvr taught them phonics and I don't know about phonics too. But it was colourful and fun.
my messy explanation
Number bonds, to teach her the bonds of Ones and Tens. Hopefully she can faster learn to add Ones first, then Tens and no need to go thru the ordeal of counting them one by one.
Example of Number Bond
Therefore, I decided to do some practise with her by printing out some additions and subtractions. For me, personally I feel that most children have problems with subtractions than additions. Do you?
In school, I learnt that they learn with drawing pictures to show the tens rather than in numbers thus I had to have to prep for a lot of patience when I was explaining to her since it was our very FIRST time trying something new together.

Therefore I used the simple Bond exercise and haven introduce using the Bond to do Addition and Subtraction. I have included the blank worksheet template and also the simple worksheet I created for her. She did well separating the Ones and Tens.
