Weekend Learning Fun - Decoding Sight Words

Over the weekend, I changed my "materials" to entertain them while waiting during mealtimes or our kopi time. Bring out this set of Valentine Theme Decoding Sight Word cards. 

My boy wasnt so enthu though. My gal is having fun. Think anything to do with writing, he isnt so fond of doing. 

Ended up both drew a picture after finishing decoding the cards. 

To supplement my boy's Sight Word learning, I DIY my set of decodable cards. 1 thing I really like is that this activity allows their brain to think and practise their Letter Sounds. And using visual, they might be able to learn to spell the words and then remember how to read it.

Week 11 - Number Order (Wednesday)

 

Today I decided to use my new DIY template that I gotten the idea from Doodlebugs Teaching which I decided to customised to my kids' learning needs.

 

My 6Y is more advanced so I did slightly bigger numbers and venturing to the low 100s. My boy isn't that great with his number sense so I did 1 set of smaller number within 20s, 2 sets of Skip counting in 2s and 5s. (which the 5s will come in handy when he starts to learn the minute hands)

 

I started off with simple explaination of Least = Less and Great = More, using single digit to show examples and got them to write down in their mini whiteboard. OK, idea was wonderful for my girl as she grasp and started off to her activity. Idea didn't go that well, I wonder is it because he cant visualise the numbers. So I let him try the set with numbers within 20s.

 

 

 

It did works well for a while, with my 6Y progressing to the 2nd set of activity which involves some addition or subtraction sums. My boy is still struggling. And he starts having trouble after 20 as he isn't that "good" with his numbers which needs more drill and practise.

 

I took out the DIY Base blocks that I did previously. I compare the blocks, sorting out the same ones, asking him to count the balance (which will left with smaller numbers) to decided ultimately which is bigger and smaller. He got it but still....... (his attention span is still very SHORT)

 

Nonetheless, it works very well with my girl and she is doing a lot better which is a consolation to me at least. For my boy, I need to work hard and harder! Below are the 2 sets of the DIY printables I made.

 

 

1st set: It comes with 6 sets of numbers. As I mentioned above, there is 3 sets specifically for those starting out with Numbers, (1) within 20s, (2) Counting in 2s and (3) Counting in 5s. The child will arrange the number as per the board from (1) Least to Greatest or (2) Greatest to Least.

 

2nd set:  It comes with 4 sets of Mathematical sums in 4 different groups. 2 for my K2 and 2 sets which is within 20s for my K1. What the child need to do is to finish the sum, record the answers on the small cards. Finally to arrange them in the order from (1) Least to Greatest or (2) Greatest to Least. Simple as that.

 

On Tuesday, We did simple counting and Revision on Addition and also counting on Base Blocks for my 5Y. This is what we did.

 

 

For my girl, She already started to do problem sums (which I told her from next exercise onwards, she need to answer in sentence which I think will be good for practising sentence constructing). After that on Time, Greater and Lesser as well as the Number Order.

Week 9 - Learning for Sep Holiday Part 2

On Thursday we went to City Square mall as Mummy target Daiso for magnets bricks to finish up more DIY learning as well as popping into The Greatest Child (a great bookstore for children books etc) to recee as well as checking out the flash cards. Ultimately I didn't get anything cos I caught the 'DIY' fever bug! 

Happen to have Batman & group mannequins due to some Toy Fair so we took a quick snap b4 proceeding. Happy kids!

We finished the week with more assessment, 3 pages daily. The kids are more focused with my 'Stars Chop' awarded on the basis of neat and good work presented! 

And I finished up my Phonics blend and I took it out to revise the word families as well. 

Week 9 - Learning for Sep Holiday Part 1

Last week we never had much learning done, a bit done here and there thus I didnt really update. (Daddy still recuperating, Lil boy caught the fever bug)

This week, I DIYed 2 sets of Learning kit. 1 for Sight Words and 1 for Phonics Blends. It was a tedious process and on top of that, I am in the midst of clearing the kids' books, stationeries etc, as well as my storeroom. So among all the mess, this are what we have done so far..

The sight word kit includes dice, whiteboard markers, 220 sight word tiles. For my 5Y, its more on putting the magnetic sight word tiles and getting him to read and practise. Afterwhich I sorted them into "Learnt" & "New" and I sort out the Colour & Number word tiles too. 

I even use the colour coded word tiles for maths too. Addition and Subtraction. Dice can be used as well.

For my 6Y, its more on sentence forming. And she used the Blank Spinner and write random alphabets. The alphabets that she "spin", she will find a word tiles or form a word that begins with it. Good initiative!

At night, both kids get to enjoy Sticker acitivity to be creative and personalised their own box! 

I also go thru with my 5Y on A-Word families yesterday as well as E-Word families today. Get him to read the word family then do a speed reading on whichever combination that I wrote on the board. Most are 3-letter words and he did well! 

After doing the Sight Word kit, I worked on a Phonics Blend kit. I loved it as my gal used it for spelling fun too. And I can showed my boy the different combination of sounds the word make when we replace the first alphabet with another to the same word family. Good for on the move!

Today we went library on a playdate with my gal's classmate cum Teaching ideas sourcing with Mumy Sherryl. Fun to see how they "interact", especially among the boys. (Mummy Sherryl's boy is 4Y, 1Y younger than mine)

And back home before mummy start her mad mess sorting the house. They both did 4pages of assessment. An idea shared by Mummy Sherryl to try and do 3-5 pages of assessment per day!

DIY Portable Learning Case

Think last week, I chanced upon those Metal Case learning set for Sight Words. It comes with 220 Dolch Sight Word magnetic tiles which you can use for forming sentences as well as any learning activities you can think of. But guess the PRICE TAG?? $29 something with 20% discount for members. But still around $24 and I kind of don't want spend that kind of money. 

I decided to do the tedious way, with lots of love! I reuse the Pink compartment storage case which I bought a while back and it's unused, cut out the Magnetic Whiteboard Sheet from Daiso and use velcro to stick to box. I added mini whiteboard markers which Daiso sells 5 for $2! 

I used the Magnetic Adhesive Strips & Mini bricks for the words. I used excel to create the table, adjust alignment for the black & white words so they can fit the mini magnetic bricks. The colour coded are from Mr Printables. For the size I print out, I used 5 sheets by 5 sheets.

The link comes in black n white, colour coded too. If you use the magnetic strip, can go without the hassle of alignment for the mini magnetic bricks. I would recommend use the link for the words and magnetic strips.

I added my DIY Spinner, whiteboard markers and dice. They can use it to learn sight words, forming sentences, writing, maths or even HYPY for my 6Y. When they need a break, just use it for creative drawing, tic tac toe etc.

More teaching materials done

Been real busy this week as Hubby went for a Knee Reconstruction op and I have to juggle daily chores, meals, kids and him. Therefore this week, we only have 2 actual lessons. 

Again, today we had no lessons thus I thought I go and prepare the materials that I have KIV-ed previously so I could use them next week or if possible over the weekends. 

I like this Penguin Theme printable from TeachersPayTeachers. I printed it out with intention for my boy. Will be a good practise, as well as revision for him to blend the words. 

Then with ideas from Mummy Sherryl, I print this template out. Mummy Sherryl uses this to teach Odd/Even number, addition, subtraction, spelling and also place value all in 1 activity. Super like her idea and think it would work well for my 6Y first. Mummy Sherryl has a blog that she updates her teaching journey as well. You can link the link above to pop over.

And I created this template after seeing her using them with her kids. She uses it to do number bond, addition etc. Thus I thought I jus do a blank template, uses it for addition and subtraction. It will work as a practise for my gal but a learning activity for my boy. 

And this website that Mummy Sherryl shared with me. I printed this for more dice activity. At the same time can teach addition and also "greater" or "smaller" than. Not bad right. Really loved the sharing of ideas I have with Mummy Sherryl. 

And lastly, i created more blank spinner templates. Will definetely be using them for more upcoming interesting activities.
